France Tries Algerian Influencers for Calling for Violence

Today, Monday, the two Algerian influencers Boualem “Dualmen” (59 years old) and Zazou Youssef (25 years old) will appear before the French judiciary on charges of inciting violence and terrorism through videos they posted on TikTok.

The French authorities apprehended four people last January, including the two defendants, on charges of publishing content that incites hatred and calls for acts of violence, which increased diplomatic tensions between Paris and Algeria. TikTok confirmed that it had barred the offending accounts due to their violation of hate speech rules.

“Dualmen”, who is followed by 168 thousand people, faces the charge of “incitement to commit a crime” after he broadcast a video that was considered a call to murder, while “Zazou Youssef” faces the charge of “public incitement to terrorism”, after appearing in a video clip calling for attacks inside France and acts of violence in Algeria.
Prosecutor General Camille Miancioni had earlier stated that Zazou Youssouf would be tried on February 24 on charges of “publicly inciting a terrorist act,” adding in a statement that he “faces a prison sentence of up to seven years and a fine of 100,000 euros if convicted.”
