The recent visit of French MP Sébastien Delogu to Algeria, from June 26 to 30, 2025, continues to stir a major political storm in France.
At the heart of the controversy: critical remarks abroad
The uproar stems from a series of critical comments made by the La France Insoumise (LFI) lawmaker on Canal Algérie, targeting Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau, French media outlets, and what he described as a hostile climate toward Algeria.
Delogu denounced a “relentless campaign against the Algerian people,” singling out the “Bolorized media” accused of spreading “racist and colonialist” narratives. He also called for respectful dialogue between the two nations, urging both sides to “speak as equals.”
Convictions in Algeria: a heated backdrop
His remarks come amid already strained relations between Paris and Algiers. Two recent court rulings have reignited bilateral tensions: the upheld five-year prison sentence of Algerian writer Boualem Sansal, and the seven-year sentence handed to French sports journalist Christophe Gleizes for “glorifying terrorism.”
These rulings sparked a backlash in France, particularly in political and media circles. Delogu’s silence on these cases has been interpreted by some—especially on the far right—as a lack of solidarity.
A target of the far right and internal dissent
Upon his return to Paris, MP Delogu found himself under fierce attack. Labelled a “paper Frenchman” by some of his detractors, he has been accused of disloyalty to the Republic. His comments in Algeria also caused discomfort within his own political ranks.
La France Insoumise swiftly released a clarification, distancing itself from Delogu’s statements: “MP Sébastien Delogu expressed a personal opinion while in Algeria. His remarks do not reflect the position of the parliamentary groups or the movement,” said the party led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon.
This partial disavowal reveals the unease within LFI, already grappling with internal divisions over foreign policy, immigration, and the legacy of colonialism.
A speech that challenges freedom of expression and historical taboos
Nevertheless, Delogu’s intervention has sparked a broader debate around colonial memory, freedom of expression in foreign affairs, and the complex, often ambivalent, relationship between France and Algeria.
Through his remarks, the MP shed light on a reality frequently sidelined in French public discourse: a segment of the population, descended from post-colonial immigration, is calling for a redefined international relationship based on mutual respect. But is that voice being heard—or systematically marginalized?
The Delogu affair thus underscores the fragility of Franco-Algerian dialogue and the challenge faced by French politicians who attempt to present an alternative narrative without triggering a wave of backlash.
