French Navy Seizes 4.2 Tons of Cocaine in Polynesia

Local broadcaster TNTV reported, and the High Commission of French Polynesia later confirmed in a statement, that the French navy seized 4.249 tons of cocaine from a vessel.

The military specified that the intercepted ship, originating from Central America, was carrying 174 bales of cocaine and claimed to be en route to South Africa. The drugs were destroyed at sea, outside the Polynesian exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and its protected marine area.

“In agreement with the Papeete public prosecutor’s office and in accordance with international law practices, the ship and its crew resumed their navigation,” the High Commission stated.

The prosecutor’s office chose not to press charges so as not to burden the Papeete court, the capital of the French territory, with drug cases not intended for the Polynesian islands.
