The Regional Road Safety Committee in Gabès, meeting at the governorate headquarters, called for the activation of local road safety committees. It also urged the identification of unauthorized (illegal) speed bumps and their removal within a period not exceeding 15 days.
Municipalities and public works asked to support replacement
On the same occasion, municipalities and the Regional Directorate of Public Works and Housing were asked to provide the necessary resources to remove these non-compliant speed bumps. Where needed, they should be replaced with new devices meeting the technical specifications in force.
Motorbike crashes: 217 cases up to 20 November, +23%
The meeting also discussed the issue of motorbikes and the serious road accidents they cause. From the start of the current year up to 20 November, 217 motorbike-related accidents were recorded, compared with 194 over the same period in 2024, representing an estimated increase of 23%.
According to the figures presented, motorbike accidents over the same period this year resulted in 41 deaths and 302 injuries, versus 56 deaths and 272 injuries during the same period in 2024.
Helmet, speed and enforcement: boost awareness and penalties
Participants stressed the need to step up awareness campaigns about the dangers of speeding and the importance of wearing a helmet. They also called for stronger inspection and enforcement efforts, particularly regarding not wearing a helmet and the use of non-compliant motorbikes. The meeting further highlighted the importance of organizing targeted campaigns to register medium-displacement motorbikes.
Governor urges road maintenance and pothole repairs
Chairing the meeting, the Governor of Gabès, Radouane Nssibi, urged municipalities to maintain roads and fix potholes, in order to improve road safety conditions.
