Thamer Mezhoud, Member of Parliament for the Gabès constituency, confirmed in a statement to Tunisienumérique that new intoxication cases were recorded in the region. Around 39 students from three educational institutions suffered respiratory distress on Monday, reportedly due to gas emissions from the Tunisian Chemical Complex.
These incidents revive deep-seated concerns among residents, who are frequently exposed to episodes of air pollution in this industrial zone.
A decisive court hearing scheduled for Thursday, December 4
The MP stated that the ruling session in the urgent case filed by the local branch of the National Bar Association will be held on Thursday, December 4, 2025. The complaint seeks the immediate shutdown of the polluting units of the complex.
“According to the lawyers, all available evidence strongly suggests that the ruling will be in favor of the region, ordering the immediate suspension of these units,” Mezhoud said.
Pressure on the presidential commission handling the pollution file
Asked about the progress of the special commission created by President Kaïs Saïed to address the pollution crisis in Gabès, the MP stressed that both residents and elected officials are still waiting for clear communication.
He recalled that the MPs of the region have demanded that the commission publicly present its action plan and announce a specific timeframe for its work. “Based on the information we have, the report is close to completion.
We hope it will be published very soon, and above all that it will meet the expectations of the people of Gabès, particularly regarding the dismantling of the polluting units,” he added.
