A press conference was held on Monday, May 12, 2025, at the headquarters of the Ministry of Tourism to announce the final preparations for the upcoming event, “Tourism and Handicrafts Days in Gafsa: Study, Investment, Promotion,” scheduled to take place from May 16 to 18, 2025, in the governorate of Gafsa.
On this occasion, Minister of Tourism and Handicrafts, Soufiane Tekaya, praised the efforts of local youth, civil society, and all stakeholders who contributed to shaping the content of the event, formulating proposals, and highlighting the unique features and rich heritage of Gafsa.
As part of the initiative, the Minister announced the introduction of several tourism circuits designed by local actors, including — in an initial phase — a medina circuit, a caves and Berber heritage circuit, and a mining route.
He also shared updates on ongoing preparations for the revival of the “Red Lizard” tourist train and confirmed that Gafsa’s municipality is in the process of being added to the national list of tourist-designated municipalities.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Tourism, the event will revolve around the following key pillars:
- Project Study: A call for proposals has been issued, inviting young people to submit their tourism-related project ideas.
- Practical Workshops: Sessions will focus on tourism circuits, artisanal products, entrepreneurship, and the promotion of both tangible and intangible heritage.
- Tourism and Handicrafts Exhibition: A showcase of local products and initiatives.
- Field Visits: Site tours will be organized to explore archaeological sites, historic landmarks, and tourism-oriented development projects.
- Conference: The event will include the presentation of a strategic plan and detailed, actionable project proposals.
This comprehensive initiative aims to elevate Gafsa’s profile as a cultural and tourist destination while encouraging investment and grassroots engagement in heritage promotion.
