Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sissi has stressed the need for full implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, amid reports that a transition to the second phase is drawing near.
Al-Sissi received the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas. The two officials reviewed the situation in the Gaza Strip, along with other international and regional issues, according to a statement from the Egyptian presidency released on Saturday.
During the meeting, al-Sissi and Kallas underscored “the need to fully implement the agreement and ensure the regular, unrestricted flow of humanitarian assistance into the Strip.” They also reiterated their “rejection of any attempts to displace Palestinians from their land,” and stressed “the need to expedite the launch of the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip and the reconstruction process,” the statement said.
The statement added that both sides also emphasised “the need to continue efforts to resume the political process in order to achieve a comprehensive, just and lasting peace, in accordance with the two-state solution.”
Al-Sissi and Kallas also discussed the situations in Libya, Sudan, Syria, Lebanon, Iran and Ukraine. They “stressed the need to resolve the related crises through peaceful means, in a way that preserves the unity and territorial integrity of those states and the resources of their peoples,” while underscoring “the importance of avoiding any military escalation, given the grave repercussions it would entail and which would affect everyone.”
