German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock and her French counterpart Jean-Noel Barrot are on their way to Damascus to meet with Syria’s new leader, Ahmed al-Sharaa, the German Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
“My trip today – together with my French counterpart and on behalf of the EU – is a clear signal to the Syrians: A new political beginning between Europe and Syria, between Germany and Syria, is possible,” Baerbock stated, adding that she was going to Syria with “outstretched hand” after the fall of Bashar al-Assad’s regime.
The German foreign minister noted that the EU aims to help Syria “become a respected member of the international community.”
