Germany closes all Iranian consulates

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock announced on Thursday the closure of three Iranian consulates in Frankfurt, Hamburg and Munich after Iran executed German-Iranian citizen Jamshid Sharmahd on terrorism charges. The Iranian Embassy in Berlin will remain open.

The German Foreign Ministry previously summoned Iran’s charge d’affaires to protest the execution, while the German ambassador to Tehran also lodged a protest with the Iranian Foreign Ministry. Baerbock said that Germany has already warned Iran the execution would have “serious consequences” and that Berlin is working “tirelessly” on securing the release of other German citizens held in Iran.
