German police reported today, Monday, the arrest of the suspect in the car-ramming incident in the city of Mannheim, which resulted in the deaths of at least two people and injuries to others.
Thomas Strobl, the Interior Minister of the state of Baden-Württemberg, said that the suspect is believed to be from the state of Rhineland-Palatinate. He allegedly drove his car into a crowd in downtown Mannheim, causing fatalities and injuries. The 40-year-old German national was arrested but is currently hospitalized due to injuries.
Authorities do not believe there are any other suspects implicated in the incident. It remains unclear whether it was an intentional act or an accident. According to eyewitnesses, the suspect sped from Friedrichsring Street toward Planken Street, a major shopping avenue stretching several hundred meters, where he struck multiple pedestrians near Paradeplatz Square.
At the time of the incident, a carnival market with numerous stalls and amusement rides was taking place around the Water Tower and Planken Street. However, Minister Strobl stressed that there is currently no indication linking the attack to the carnival event.
