The magazine The Economist suggests that European countries could threaten to close U.S. military bases on their territory in response to statements by President Donald Trump regarding a possible takeover of Greenland.
According to the weekly, the future of the U.S. military presence in Europe could thus become a central issue. While many countries view this presence as a guarantee of their security—including in the face of potential American initiatives in the Arctic—others may see the threat of withdrawal as an effective lever of pressure on Washington.
The Economist also points to the possibility of Europe resorting to economic sanctions or tariffs as alternative means of pressure, while warning that such a move could inflict significant damage on European economies themselves.
It should be recalled that Greenland is part of Denmark. Danish and Greenlandic authorities have reiterated their categorical rejection of any U.S. attempt to annex the island, stressing the need to respect their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
