Growth Beyond Expectations: What Hidden Engine Is Powering the German Economy?

The German economy posted a stronger-than-expected recovery in the first quarter of 2025, raising questions about the hidden forces behind this surprising rebound amid lingering economic uncertainties.

According to a second estimate released on Friday, Germany’s GDP grew by 0.4% compared to the previous quarter—double the initial projection of 0.2%. This marks the strongest growth since the third quarter of 2022, when the economy expanded by 0.6%.

Ruth Brand, head of the Federal Statistical Office, attributed the upswing to stronger-than-anticipated performance in March, driven by export growth and increased industrial output. Exports surged by 3.2%, largely fueled by a wave of purchases from U.S. importers ahead of new tariffs announced by the Trump administration, dubbed the “Day of Liberation,” which took effect in April.

Household consumption also played a key role, rising by 0.5%—its most robust increase in recent quarters. However, government spending declined by 0.3%, which the statistics office linked to the use of a provisional budget.

Despite the positive data, many analysts remain cautious. Germany’s export-driven economy remains vulnerable to global trade tensions and protectionist policies, especially from the United States. While higher tariffs on several trade partners have been temporarily suspended to allow room for negotiations, a baseline import tax of 10% still applies globally, including to goods from EU member states.

News of the stronger growth lifted Frankfurt’s stock market by 0.5%, signaling cautious optimism for the eurozone’s traditional growth engine, which has struggled over the past two years with a sluggish manufacturing sector and weak foreign demand.

In 2024, the United States was Germany’s largest trading partner, with bilateral trade in goods totaling €253 billion. As trade policy uncertainties persist, Germany’s ability to sustain this recovery remains under close watch.
