Habib Thamer Hospital works miracles with most addicted smokers

The Habib Thamer Hospital in Tunis has solutions against tobacco, one of the most glaring evils and not only in Tunisia. The medical crew of the Anti-Smoking Committee reported that this institution managed to wean 70% of smokers treated in 2023 fully… The information was delivered to TAP yesterday Friday by Doctor Sofien Kamoun, president of the Committee, on the sidelines of an awareness day organized at Habib Thamer Hospital on World No Tobacco Day (May 31).

The practitioner revealed that of the 600 patients who consulted his unit, 400 have completely stopped smoking. Dr Kamoun also stated that the Committee follows a treatment protocol for each case taking into account age, state of physical and mental health and degree of dependence. It is this particularization that ensures the success of the treatment, provided that the smoker has a firm desire to quit. The physician said that patients who enter the hospital door suffer from severe pathologies as a result of this tobacco addiction, and citizens solely consult when they are at a critical stage.

He advised smokers not to wait for significant health problems to take the step of quitting, they must quit now before complications arise. Dr Kamoun said Tunisia ranks first in the Arab world for the rate of addicted smokers, and half of men over 30 have smoked at least once in their lives. He cautioned of the rapid advance of the scourge, particularly among women and young adolescents. He said that one in six young people aged 12 to 18 have tried smoking at least once in their life… Finally, he declared that every 40 minutes a Tunisian man or woman dies from tobacco. A real public health problem that is not sufficiently addressed.
