Hamas announced its readiness to hand over its weapons in Gaza to a Palestinian authority overseeing the territory—on the condition that the Israeli occupation comes to an end.
The statement marks a significant shift in the movement’s discourse, explicitly linking its armed capabilities to future political developments.
Speaking to Tunisie Numérique, former Tunisian diplomat Abdallah Laabidi contextualized the announcement.
He recalled that “the Palestinian people have faced unimaginable hardship in recent years, both humanitarian and security-related.”
According to him, this position emerges at a moment of global geopolitical transformation:
“International geopolitics is shifting, particularly in regional alliances and power balances. This inevitably influences the calculations of actors on the ground,” he explained.
Laabidi believes Hamas’ declaration is driven by a climate of increased reassurance stemming from ongoing negotiations aimed at reducing tensions.
“Hamas is acting this way because it has received confidence-building signals from the parties involved in the talks. This opens a path to de-escalation,” he stated.
He added that while Hamas remains “a movement of armed resistance in the face of occupation,” it could consider storing or surrendering its weapons if a robust international guarantee framework is established:
“If intermediaries guarantee calm, the safety of Palestinian civilians, and border protection, Hamas will have no difficulty setting aside its weapons,” he emphasized.
If implemented, this position could mark a major turning point in the conflict, opening the door to internal political restructuring and new diplomatic perspectives.
