The Gaza Health Ministry announced the Gaza Strip as a polio epidemic zone on Monday. It cautioned that the outbreak “poses a health threat to the residents of the Gaza Strip and neighbouring countries and a setback to the global polio eradication program.”
The ministry attributed the epidemic to a lack of drinkable water, destroyed infrastructure and “thousands of tons” of waste in the enclave. It added that the international program to curb the epidemic will not succeed without an immediate end to hostilities between Hamas and Israel, access to clean water and a resolution of other public health issues in Gaza.
