India: After Diwali, New Delhi chokes under pollution 50 times higher than WHO standards

The morning after Diwali’s dazzling celebrations, New Delhi woke up on Tuesday to a thick toxic haze, with the sky shrouded in a suffocating grey smog.

The Festival of Lights, one of the most important events in the Hindu calendar, lit up the city on Monday night with millions of candles, lanterns, and fireworks, symbolizing the triumph of light over darkness. But the celebratory glow quickly turned into an environmental nightmare.

According to data from IQAir, a Swiss company specializing in air quality monitoring, PM2.5 particulate levels the most harmful to human health — reached up to 846 micrograms per cubic meter in some districts, more than 50 times the World Health Organization (WHO) limit.

The alarming pollution levels have once again made New Delhi the world’s most polluted capital, sparking renewed calls for urgent environmental action and stricter regulation of firework use during festivals.
