Indonesia- Multiple deaths reported as deadly floods hits Jakarta

At least nine people have died in the most serious flooding to struck Indonesia’s capital Jakarta since 2013. Power has been cut to areas across the city of 30 million to evade further electrocutions.

Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency requested citizens to leave flood-hit areas. ‘The first priority is saving lives,’ stated agency head Doni Monardo.

Authorities told approximately 19,000 people were evacuated, but that number did not involve residents in Jakarta’s satellite cities.

‘We’re evacuating people right now,’ Jakarta governor Anies Baswedan informed reporters.
