Vance did not provide further details about the US assessment of Khamenei’s condition or the information on which it is based.
Washington to judge Iran by its actions
Speaking about negotiations with Tehran, Vance said Iran would need to “change its behavior” for an agreement to be reached.
He stressed that the talks would be based on actions rather than words, adding that what Iran does over the next two months will determine how the United States deals with Tehran.
Disagreement over the next steps
Efforts are nevertheless continuing to revive negotiations between Washington and Tehran and to restore the agreement reached between the two sides in June.
The main disagreement concerns the sequence of measures to be taken before any broader understanding can be reached. Iran is seeking US measures related to sanctions and freedom of navigation, while Washington is pressing for concrete Iranian concessions on the nuclear program before offering any economic relief.
The issue comes amid continued tensions between the United States and Iran, alongside diplomatic efforts aimed at restarting negotiations.
