Shigeru Ishiba won the ruling Liberal Democratic Party’s (LDP) leadership election on Friday, securing his position as Japan’s next prime minister. In the final round of voting, Ishiba, a former defence minister, garnered 215 votes, while Takaichi, Japan’s economic security minister, received 194 votes.
Ishiba, a 67-year-old veteran politician, is making his fifth bid for Japan’s top job in the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) leadership contest. He is known for his strong stance on defence and has advocated decreasing reliance on nuclear power in favour of renewables.
