The ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, marked by missile exchanges between the two countries, has had a significant impact on air traffic in the region. As tensions escalate, several flights have been canceled or diverted, causing disruptions for many international and regional airlines.
Ben Gurion Airport Closed and Flights Canceled
Ben Gurion International Airport, Israel’s main airport, remains closed to all civilian flights until further notice. Israeli airline El Al has suspended all services until Thursday, June 19, 2025, due to the deteriorating security situation. Israel’s airspace has also been closed to civilian aircraft. This decision has affected neighboring countries such as Iran, Iraq, and Jordan, where flights have been suspended due to the escalating conflict.
Mass Cancellations of International Flights
El Al announced the cancellation of numerous flights to various international destinations until Monday, June 23, 2025. Among the destinations affected are Berlin, Barcelona, Warsaw, Munich, Lisbon, Tokyo, Krakow, Venice, Marseille, Crete, Santorini, Moscow, and others. Lufthansa has canceled all flights to Tel Aviv and Tehran until July 31, with flights to Amman, Erbil, and Beirut currently suspended until June 20.
Air France has also suspended its flights to Tel Aviv “until further notice” and is monitoring the situation in the Middle East closely. Other major European airlines, including British Airways, easyJet, and Ryanair, have decided not to serve Israel at this time.
Middle Eastern Airlines Suspend Services
Middle Eastern airlines, including Emirates, Etihad Airways, and Qatar Airways, have suspended some of their services to the region and redirected several flights. Emirates has canceled flights to Amman, Beirut, Tehran, Baghdad, and Basra until June 30, with services to Jordan and Lebanon canceled until June 22. Flights to Tel Aviv are also suspended.
Etihad Airways has canceled all flights from Abu Dhabi to Tel Aviv until June 22, while Qatar Airways has temporarily canceled flights to Iran, Iraq, and Syria due to the ongoing situation.
American Airlines Suspend Flights
On the American side, United Airlines has suspended flights to Tel Aviv until July 31, while Delta has halted flights from New York’s JFK Airport to Tel Aviv until August 31.
Foreign Ministry Warnings
This disruption in air traffic comes at a time when several governments have issued travel warnings. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth, and Development Office (FCDO) has advised against all travel to Israel due to the conflict, stating that the situation could rapidly deteriorate without warning, affecting both air and road links. Other European countries, including France and Germany, have issued similar warnings regarding travel to Israel and Iran due to the risks associated with the ongoing conflict.
The situation in the Middle East continues to heavily impact air traffic, and these disruptions are likely to continue until the Israel-Iran conflict is resolved. Travelers are advised to stay updated on news and check the status of their flights with airlines and relevant authorities before making any decisions regarding travel to the region.
