Israeli police announced on Monday the arrest of a woman suspected of plotting an attack to assassinate Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. The plan, which reportedly involved the use of an explosive device, was detected in time by Israeli security services.
A Plot Involving an Explosive Device
According to Israel’s public broadcaster Kan, the suspect resides in central Israel and is believed to have been in contact with other individuals as part of a coordinated plan to target the head of government. The investigation was immediately handed over to the Shabak (Israel’s internal security agency), which revealed that the woman had intended to carry out the attack using an explosive device.
She now faces formal charges of conspiring to commit a terrorist act.
Previous Tensions and Targeted Threats
This arrest comes amid ongoing security tensions, particularly following a similar case in September 2024, when an Israeli businessman was detained over suspected collaboration with Iranian intelligence services.
According to the Israeli news site Walla, the man had been arrested in August 2023. Authorities suspected that he had been recruited by Iran to assassinate several senior Israeli officials, including Benjamin Netanyahu, former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, and former Shabak chief Ronen Bar.
Investigations revealed that the individual had traveled to Turkey, crossed the border into Iran, and reportedly met with members of Iranian intelligence. Upon returning to Israel, he allegedly continued contact with foreign agents to plan hostile operations against the state.
Rising Concern Over Hybrid Threats
Israeli authorities have stated that they take any threat to state institutions extremely seriously, especially when internal complicity or foreign actors are involved. Iran, in particular, is viewed as a long-standing strategic and security rival to Israel.
This latest arrest highlights growing concerns over hybrid threats that combine local radicalization with foreign interference, posing an increasing challenge to Israeli security services amid a volatile regional landscape.
