Italy to start giving booster shots from September 20

Administration of the booster dose of the COVID-19 vaccine in Italy will begin among categories of citizens deemed as “immunocompromised” starting from September 20, Health Minister Roberto Speranza and Special Commissioner for the Implementation of Health Measures Francesco Paolo Figliuolo announced on Friday.

The official decision to begin administering additional doses of the BioNTech/Pfizer and Moderna mRNA vaccines comes after the approval of AIFA’s (Italian Medicines Agency) Technical Scientific Commission. So far, the third dose has been approved for use in “immunocompromised” people, individuals over 80 years of age, nursing home residents as well as front-line health workers.
