The assistant secretary-general of the Tunisian General Labour Union (UGTT), Salah Eddine Salmi, said that the general strike the organization had decided for 21 January is “practically over”.
He made the remarks in a statement to Tunisie Numérique’s regional correspondent, on the sidelines of his chairing of the proceedings of the 28th regional congress of the Regional Labour Union in Sfax.
A delay in issuing the “strike notice” amid a disrupted context
According to Salmi, the situation stems from the fact that the deadline for issuing the strike notice had been missed. He attributed the delay to the confusion surrounding the date of the union’s extraordinary congress, which, he said, affected the preparedness of the union structures for that milestone.
A strike could still be held at a later date
Despite the strike not taking place on 21 January, Salmi did not rule out the possibility of organizing it at a later date. He noted that any decision to set a new date lies with the administrative commission.
