Japan Lifts Tsunami Warning After 6.7-Magnitude Earthquake Off Northern Coast

Japanese authorities on Friday lifted a tsunami warning that had been issued earlier following a powerful 6.7-magnitude earthquake off the country’s northern coast, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

In its initial alert, the agency warned that waves along the northern coastline could reach up to one meter in height, prompting heightened vigilance among local authorities and coastal residents. However, after further assessment, the warning was lifted as no significant tsunami activity was recorded.

The earthquake occurred just days after a stronger tremor struck the same region earlier this week. That earlier quake, measuring 7.5 in magnitude, left at least 50 people injured and caused widespread damage, including destroyed roads, shattered windows, and tsunami waves reaching up to 70 centimeters.

Following Friday’s earthquake, the JMA again cautioned about the potential for tsunami waves of up to one meter along the northern Pacific coast, before later withdrawing the alert. Japan’s public broadcaster NHK confirmed that no disruptions were reported in port operations across the affected area.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the 6.7-magnitude earthquake occurred approximately 130 kilometers from the city of Kuji on Japan’s main island of Honshu. NHK noted that the level of ground shaking was weaker than that of Monday’s earthquake, which caused more extensive structural damage.

Japan lies along the Pacific Ring of Fire, one of the world’s most seismically active zones, making earthquakes and tsunami risks a constant concern. Authorities continue to emphasize rapid response systems and public preparedness to mitigate the impact of such natural disasters.
