Jordanian King and Al-Sharaa Discuss Border Security, Smuggling, and Syrian Refugee Repatriation.

Jordan’s King Abdullah II met with Syrian interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa in Amman on Wednesday to examine border security and preparations for the return of Syrian refugees, according to a statement from the Royal Court.

The statement emphasized that King Abdullah underscored the importance of close coordination between the two countries to address various challenges related to border security, arms and drug smuggling, and creating suitable conditions for the voluntary and safe return of Syrian refugees.

Additionally, the Jordanian king condemned Israeli attacks on Syrian territory, reaffirming Jordan’s support for Syria’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity.

Al-Sharaa’s visit to Amman lasted only a few hours. King Abdullah welcomed him at Marka Airport before they headed to Raghadan Palace for talks. The Syrian delegation included Foreign Minister Asaad Al-Shaibani and other officials.

Earlier, on January 7, Al-Shaibani visited Amman and met with his Jordanian counterpart, Ayman Safadi, to discuss border issues, drug and arms smuggling, terrorism, and threats from ISIS. Both ministers announced the formation of joint committees in the fields of energy, health, trade, and water.

Safadi also visited Damascus on December 23, where he met with Al-Sharaa and voiced Jordan’s willingness to assist in Syria’s reconstruction.

This visit marks Al-Sharaa’s first trip to Amman since assuming power following the ousting of President Bashar Al-Assad on December 8. In the past two months, he has also visited Saudi Arabia and Turkey.
