The Tunisian Union of Newspaper Editors expressed, on Saturday, its “deep concern” over the continued deprivation of Tunisian journalists of their professional press cards for the second consecutive year. It called for speeding up the issuance of the government decree aimed at filling the vacancies within the Independent Authority responsible for granting the National Professional Journalist Card, in order to enable it to resume its activities.
In a statement, the Union stressed that the decision to extend the validity of the 2024 professional cards is not renewable, in accordance with the provisions of Government Decree No. 229 of 2021. This means that these cards are no longer valid, a situation that hinders journalists in the exercise of their profession and deprives them of their professional rights.
The Union also denounced the denial of professional cards to journalists and sports photographers for the year 2026, a measure that will prevent them from accessing stadiums and sports halls to carry out their duties. It further expressed surprise that, up until the month of January, media institutions had not received any files related to card renewals or new applications within the usual deadlines.
Finally, the Union called for urgent action to address these issues and to put an end to administrative bottlenecks, in the interest of Tunisia’s media sector.
