On Friday October 11, 2024, the President of the Republic, Kais Saied, received at the Carthage Palace Mustapha Ferjani, Minister of Health. This crucial meeting made it possible to tackle strategic topics for the future of the Tunisian public health system, including the reconstruction of health infrastructure and the strengthening of pharmaceutical self-sufficiency.
Acceleration of the reconstruction of the health system
During this discussion, President Saied insisted on the significance of working with maximum speed to reform the public health sector. With already available funding, he underlined that it is crucial to simplify procedures and overcome bureaucratic obstacles that slow down progress. This reform seeks to guarantee equitable access to quality care for all citizens, considering health as a fundamental human right.
Advances in health infrastructure
The president welcomed recent accomplishments in the field, including the creation of several basic health centers in different regions of the country, and this, within a record time.
These infrastructures are important to improve access to care, particularly in rural areas and inserted, where access to medical services remains a challenge.
Recovery of the Tunisian pharmaceutical industry
Another important point examined during the meeting was the revival of the Tunisian Society of Pharmaceutical Industries (STIP), whose activity had been interrupted. The restart of this strategic enterprise will permit Tunisia to strengthen its self-sufficiency in drug production, thus reducing its dependence on imports.
This revival is a key step to ensure stability in the supply of medicines and to meet the needs of the population.
A global vision for health without borders
President Saied has concluded by recalling that health is a universal right, echoing the vision of the World Health Organization (WHO), which advocates access to health for all, without geographic or social limits. This ambition joins the current efforts of Tunisia to restructure its health system and ensure a better quality of life for its citizens.
Therefore, with these ambitious initiatives, Tunisia appears determined to redefine its health system and become a regional model in terms of accessible and effective health care. Cooperation between the government and the various stakeholders will be essential to achieve this vision.
