Kaïs Saïed: The Term “Hogra” Must Disappear Completely from Tunisia

“La Hogra” — A Tunisian Term Synonymous with Injustice, Contempt, and Indifference

This word, deeply rooted in the Tunisian collective consciousness, repeatedly resurfaces in public discourse whenever citizens feel that their pain and concerns are being ignored by those in power. “La hogra” has therefore become a familiar expression, closely tied to waves of protest often fueled by feelings of marginalisation and injustice.

“This term must vanish completely from Tunisia.” These were the words of President Kaïs Saïed in response to the resurgence of the word “hogra” in the discourse of a significant portion of the Tunisian population following the tragedy in Mezzouna. The collapse of a wall at a school there claimed the lives of three students and injured two others—a tragic event that immediately sparked demonstrations in the region.

On Wednesday, during a meeting at the Palace of Carthage focused on the state of many school facilities and the urgent need to protect students, the president reaffirmed that all Tunisians are equal before the law, as stated in the Constitution. He added that “the rights of Tunisian women and men must be guaranteed, not only in legal and constitutional texts, but also in daily reality.”

President Saïed also stressed that, despite the economic challenges they face, Tunisians never fail to show up when solidarity and national duty are required.
