Kenya’s president withdraws tax bill after protests

Kenya’s President William Ruto claimed on Wednesday he is withdrawing the new finance bill, which included tax hikes, that sparked deadly demonstrations and the storming of the parliament.

“Members of the public insist on the necessity for us to make more concessions. The people have spoken,” Ruto said during a televised address. “I concede,” he added.

AFP previously reported, citing Kenya Medical Association President Simon Kigondu, that at least 13 people lost their lives when Kenya’s police opened fire against protesters. Later, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights (KNHRC) said the number rose to 22.
