Speaking with Tunisie Numérique, Secretary-General of the Tunisian Union of Individual Taxis Fawzi Khabouchi, confirmed that the proposed fare increase of 900 millimes on individual taxi meters is still under examination. He explained that this proposal remains a discussion point among unions and industry professionals, and no formal request has yet been sent to the Ministry of Transport.
Khabouchi underlined the challenging situation confronting individual taxi drivers, who often work up to 14 hours a day to cover expenses due to the high cost of living. He noted that the proposal for an increase is not intended as a pressure tactic but rather a possible solution to alleviate drivers’ difficulties.
In this context, he urged the relevant authorities to consider the proposal, evaluate the situation, and explore solutions, such as fuel subsidies for workers in the sector, particularly since any fare increase would primarily impact customers.
EKhabouchi added that some have even suggested a higher increase of 2,000 millimes, but all options remain under review.
