Lebansese media reported that the government is studying a proposal to tax WhatsApp, sparking outrage and anger among the public on Thursday, as ministers examine ways to boost revenues for the 2020 budget.
News surfaced that the plan, suggested during Wednesday’s Cabinet session, would result in a monthly charge of $6 if the user made a call every day on WhatsApp. The plan would force a fee of $0.20 a day, for any call made using VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol). This protocol is used by many applications including WhatsApp, Facebook call and FaceTime.
If the user made a call every day, a total of $6 will be subtracted monthly. For the total number of VoIP users, expected at about three million, the Treasury would secure annual revenues of about $216 million.
