Libya-384 prisoners escape from prison in western Libya

The Libyan UN-backed government’s Ministry of Justice on Wednesday said that hundreds of inmates have escaped from a prison in the western city of Surman, some 60 km west of the capital Tripoli.

“On April 13, as the liberation of the city of Surman, a rebellion happened at the Surman Correction and Rehabilitation Facility that ended with mass escape of all 384 (male) inmates and nine female inmates,” the ministry said in a statement.

It added that all of the inmates “were pre-trial detained or sentenced based on correct legal procedures.”

“The Ministry of Justice issued instructions to the Judicial Police Department to quickly start a thorough investigation to reveal the background of the incident and determine those responsible for it in order to take legal procedures against them,” the statement said.
