The Libyan Government of National Unity announced on Tuesday, May 13, 2025, the creation of a new department under the Ministry of Interior: the General Directorate for Combating Illegal Immigration. This new body will assume the responsibilities previously held by the Agency for Combating Illegal Immigration.
The decision includes the dissolution of the former agency, with its duties transferred to the newly established directorate. All its movable and immovable assets, as well as its security and administrative personnel, will be transferred to the Ministry of Interior.
The government also decided to dissolve the Special Operations Force, transferring its assets and personnel to the Ministry of Interior.
Another government decision canceled the Directorate of Operations and Judicial Security from the organizational structure of the Judicial Police and transferred the Authority for Facility and Infrastructure Security to the Ministry of Interior.
A separate decision instructed the Ministry of Justice to take the necessary steps to implement these changes, including the redistribution of staff and equipment from the dissolved unit.
Additionally, the government decided to form a committee chaired by the Minister of Interior, with members including the Deputy Minister of Justice and a representative from the Supreme Judicial Council. The committee will be tasked with monitoring conditions in prisons and detention centers and ensuring compliance with humanitarian standards and the proper treatment of detainees.
It is worth noting that the Libyan capital, Tripoli, witnessed violent armed clashes on Monday in the Salah al-Din area between Brigade 444 and the Stability Support Apparatus. The fighting led to the death of Abdelghani al-Kikli, head of the Stability Support Apparatus, along with at least six other individuals.
