Madagascar : Tropical storm causes major damage in the country’s northwest

Tropical storm “Vitya”, bringing strong winds and heavy rainfall, has triggered widespread flooding in northwestern Madagascar, particularly in the Majunga region.

The system was accompanied by gusts of around 170 km/h, along with intense downpours that led to flooding, population displacement, and disruptions to electricity and drinking-water supplies.

Against this backdrop, authorities continue to urge residents to remain cautious and have maintained the highest alert level in several areas.

In Majunga, the passage of “Vitya” pushed water levels higher, leaving several neighbourhoods cut off.

According to the latest report from the National Bureau for Risk and Disaster Management, the storm has affected more than 5,000 people, with around 3,400 relocated to temporary shelters.

Some 1,900 homes were also damaged by the floods, while several schools sustained partial damage.

The bureau’s operations director, Haja Andriamitantsua, said authorities have “begun evacuating residents from areas where rising waters have isolated certain villages and neighbourhoods,” adding that reception centres have been set up and food aid distributed to those affected.

She added that the storm is continuing its track toward the southeast across the Central Highlands, where the capital Antananarivo is located.

As the system continues to bring heavy rainfall that could trigger flooding, flash floods and landslides—especially in areas where drainage networks have not been rehabilitated—authorities have also stressed the need to remain vigilant about health risks, as mpox continues to spread in parts of the island.
