In a statement to Tunisie Numérique on Monday, January 6, 2024, virology professor Dr. Mahjoub Al-Aouni explained that the virus recently discussed in the media is not new. It has been circulating and known since 2001 and is present in many countries. He added that it is one of the viruses that impact the respiratory system.
Al-Aouni stressed that this virus does not have considerable epidemic potential and is not related to the COVID-19 virus, as they belong to different families. He further clarified that its symptoms primarily affect the respiratory system, similar to other known viruses that typically spread during this time of year.
He also reiterated that there is no truth to the rumours claiming that this virus is an epidemic requiring special measures.
