Médenine: Heavy Rains Disrupt Classes at Two Schools in Zarzis

The delegation of Zarzis, in the governorate of Médenine, recorded significant rainfall overnight Thursday, with amounts reaching 114 mm in Hassi Jerbi, 100 mm in Zarzis city, 64 mm in Khweïet and 63 mm at Chammakh Farm, according to available data.

    Rainfall brings relief to farmers

The rainfall was welcomed by farmers in Zarzis, known as Tunisia’s “capital of olive trees”. The rains came after several years of drought and at an important period for the agricultural season.

Farmers consider the rainfall beneficial for next year’s olive harvest, as well as for rain-fed crops, particularly cereals and lentils. Early autumn rains help improve soil conditions and provide trees and crops with the moisture they need.

A source from the Regional Agricultural Development Commission of Médenine told TAP that the rainfall is expected to improve vegetation cover and the overall condition of olive plantations. Rain-fed olive groves account for around 90% of olive cultivation in the region.

The source added that the rainfall could also contribute to improving olive production in terms of both quantity and quality, while providing favorable conditions for the region’s rain-fed cereal and other major crops.

Heavy rains disrupt classes at two schools

While farmers welcomed the rainfall, the heavy precipitation also affected infrastructure in Zarzis.

Several roads and tracks were flooded, while rainwater entered a number of homes in the delegation.

The rainfall also forced the suspension of classes at two schools, after rainwater flooded their courtyards, preventing students and educational staff from reaching the classrooms.

In other schools, classes were maintained with difficulty thanks to the availability of alternative entrances that allowed students and staff to access the premises.

    Civil Protection and municipality intervene

Civil Protection units continued their operations to pump water from affected homes and from school courtyards where rainwater had accumulated.

The Zarzis municipal sanitation service also intervened to clean drainage channels in the El Garaa area. In the city center, equipment and workers were deployed to facilitate water drainage, clear evacuation channels and intervene at critical points.

Field monitoring is continuing to ensure smooth traffic flow and limit water accumulation, with further interventions to be carried out wherever necessary.
