Media: BBC Director-General resigns because of Donald Trump!

A major blow for the British broadcaster BBC. Its Director-General Tim Davie and Director of News Deborah Turness have shocked everyone by stepping down, after a controversy over the editing of a speech by Donald Trump.

This Sunday, Tim Davie, who has been serving as Director-General since 2020, made this decision as the British public broadcaster faces accusations that it edited separate excerpts of a Donald Trump speech in such a way that he appears to tell his supporters he would walk with them to the Capitol to “fight like hell.” “Mistakes were made and, as Director-General, I must take full responsibility,” he said in a statement.

BBC Chairman Samir Shah confirmed the news in a statement: “It is a sad day for the BBC. Tim has been an excellent Director-General over the past five years,” but he was facing “persistent pressure (…) that led him to take this decision” to resign.

It should be noted that this affair was revealed on Tuesday by the conservative newspaper The Daily Telegraph. It concerns a BBC “Panorama” documentary, broadcast one week before the U.S. presidential election on November 5, 2024.
