Minister of Interior participates in the Border Security Summit in United Kingdom

At the invitation of British Home Secretary, Yvette Cooper, the Tunisian Minister of the Interior, Khaled El-Nouri, accompanied by a delegation of senior officials from the Ministry, traveled to the British capital, London, to partake in the ‘Border Security Summit: Organized Crime in Migration’ hosted by the United Kingdom on March 31 and April 1, 2025. The summit was attended by delegations from 46 nations, headed by 37 ministers, as well as representatives from regional and international organizations such as the European Union, the Council of Europe, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, and social media platforms (X, Meta, and TikTok). The summit focused on examining ways to strengthen collaborative efforts to combat irregular migration and address cross-border crimes associated with it.

The first day of the international summit, which was opened by the British Prime Minister, was devoted to meetings of the participating ministers under the leadership of the UK Home Secretary. During the session, the Tunisian Minister of the Interior delivered a speech in which he discussed ways to enhance cooperation in combating crimes linked to irregular migration, especially regarding halting financial flows. He furthermore reiterated Tunisia’s call for adopting an approach based on partnership and burden-sharing among all stakeholders, while respecting universal human rights principles and international conventions to reduce this phenomenon. Additionally, he emphasized the need to simultaneously address the root causes behind its spread, especially the developmental disparities between source and destination countries. He stressed that addressing irregular migration is beyond the capacity of any single country, even with abundant human and material resources. Therefore, it is essential to unify international efforts and strengthen collaborative mechanisms between countries and active international organizations.
