In Tunisia, the Ministry of Agriculture stated that estimates place domestic olive oil consumption between 30,000 and 50,000 tonnes, depending on the price levels recorded in each season. Consumption can reach up to 50,000 tonnes during years marked by abundant national production, which generally coincide with a decline in market prices.
The ministry added that local consumption of olive oil remains low, accounting for only 15 to 20 percent of national output, the equivalent of around 3 liters per capita per year.
It further noted that efforts are being made to raise awareness of the benefits of olive oil and to stimulate its consumption on the domestic market, through programs implemented and currently under way by the National Office of Oil (ONH). These initiatives aim to promote packaged, high-quality olive oil at affordable prices. In this context, sales reached 7.5 million liters during the 2023/2024 season, helping to revive traditional olive oil consumption habits among the general public.
The ministry also recalled the importance of boosting national olive oil consumption through the measures adopted at the Restricted Ministerial Council meeting of October 25, 2025, devoted to preparations for the 2025/2026 season. In addition to the National Office of Oil’s annual program to market affordable quantities on the domestic market, the recommendations included involving classified restaurants and hotel establishments in promoting packaged olive oil, as well as exerting pressure on profit margins applied by large retail chains.
