According to the first-ever report on drowning prevention issued by the World Health Organization (WHO), the global drowning mortality rate has dropped by 38% since 2000, which is a major advancement in global health.
However, the report emphasises that drowning remains a major public health problem, with more than 30 people drowning every hour and, in 2021 alone, 300,000 people drowned.
More than 7.2 million people, mostly children, could drown by 2050 if current trends continue, the same source indicates
