A true cultural revolution was spreading in the United Kingdom under King Charles III. According to the UK Office for National Statistics, in 2023, “Muhammad” became the most popular name for boys in England and Wales, with over 4,600 newborns given the name.
This name of Arab-Muslim origin has risen quickly in the rankings of popular names in recent years, moving from 5th place in 2019 to 2nd in 2022, before overtaking “Noah” last year, which had been the top choice for English parents since 2021.
Even with different spellings, the name remains prominent in the English Top 100. “Mohammed” is ranked 28th (1,601 births), while “Mohammad” is in 68th place (835 births). The name’s popularity differs by region: “Muhammad” holds the top spot in cities like Manchester, Birmingham, West Yorkshire, and London, where immigrant Muslim populations are larger, as noted by the French newspaper Le Figaro.
This trend is mirrored in France, where “Mohamed” was the 20th most popular name in 2023. Similarly, in areas with high immigrant populations, like Seine-Saint-Denis, “Mohamed” was the most common name, followed by “Ibrahim” and “Adam.”
