Nabeul: Pressure on olive mills rises as farmers urged to slow down harvesting to protect oil quality

The governorate of Nabeul has reached 20% progress in this season’s olive harvest, with production expected to hit 90,000 tons, compared to 61,000 tons last year — an increase of about 30%, according to the regional head of the Farmers’ Union, Imed El Baya.

He explained that 46 olive mills are currently operational, but are facing significant congestion due to the accelerated harvesting pace. This situation is causing waiting times of up to two weeks, which could negatively impact the quality of the produced olive oil.

The Farmers’ Union has therefore urged growers to slow down the harvesting pace to reduce pressure on mills and ensure high-quality oil. It also emphasized the importance of following technical guidelines for harvesting, processing, and storage.
