The official website of the United Nations revealed this Monday that Mr. Nabil Ammar, a seasoned Tunisian diplomat, has submitted his credentials to UN Secretary-General António Guterres as the new Permanent Representative of Tunisia to the organization.
The ceremony was held at the UN headquarters in New York, marking the official start of his new diplomatic duties.
Born in Tunis on July 9, 1965, Nabil Ammar is a career diplomat whose service spans over three decades in both diplomatic and administrative spheres within Tunisia. Married and a father of two daughters, he most recently served, from February 2023 to August 2024, as Minister of Foreign Affairs, Migration, and Tunisians Abroad—a pivotal role amid a particularly complex regional and international landscape.
Before this, Ammar was Tunisia’s Ambassador to the European Union, NATO, Belgium, and Luxembourg, based in Brussels. He also served in London (2012–2017) as Tunisia’s ambassador to the United Kingdom and Ireland, and held earlier diplomatic posts in Oslo, Rome, and Vienna, as well as various positions at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tunis.
He holds a degree in Economics and Management from Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University (1988) and furthered his education at the National School of Administration in Tunis and the National Defence Institute. He is fluent in French, English, Russian, and Italian, which are major assets in multilateral negotiations.
Nabil Ammar’s designation to lead Tunisia’s mission to the UN reflects the country’s intent to amplify its voice in international forums, at a time when global governance and shifting geopolitical balances call for seasoned, dialogue-oriented leaders.
Tunisia, which has long been active in multilateral arenas—particularly on issues of peace, security, sustainable development, and South-South cooperation—can now rely on a respected diplomat to defend its interests and positions on the UN stage.
