Speaking with Tunisie Numérique, Director of Health and Conservation in the Municipality of Tunis, Dr Omar Nafeir confirmed the municipality’s involvement in fighting rabies, as it has a continuous program throughout the year to combat stray dogs that are the primary cause of the spread of rabies, revealing that it was done through recent period of intensifying interventions.
Nafeir explained that the Tunis Municipality has a specialized team trained to capture stray dogs from public roads employing nets. A center devoted to the sterilization and vaccination of stray dogs focused on rabies prevention, has been working in the belvedere region since 2017. This centre is also open to the public, offering free rabies vaccinations for their dogs and cats,
He attributed the spread of rabies in the recent period to the absence of capabilities in the municipalities to vaccinate dogs and the lack of borders between the rural and civilized areas, which ease the transportation and reproduction of dogs, and therefore the spread of rabies.
He did not deny that, in light of this crisis, several snipers were contracted to euthanize dogs, explaining that the operation takes place at night in coordination with the security authority, and then the dogs are later raised.
On the alternative methods of the sniping process, the speaker stated that since 2017, the process of raising and sterilizing bulk dogs has been adopted, but this method will not be effective unless the total number of loose dogs decreases.
On the occasion of the approach of the celebration of the International Day to Resist Raby disease,he came to the approach of the citizen’s demand for the vaccination of their dogs and cats at the belvedere area centre, as an open day for vaccination will be organized.
