The Regional Director of Health in Béja, Mounir Jbali, announced in a statement to the Béja correspondent of Tunisie Numérique the inauguration of the new medical intensive care unit at the regional hospital, on the morning of Monday, 2 February 2026, after years of waiting.
A long-awaited boost amid a shortage of ICU beds
According to Mounir Jbali, the unit represents a major addition to the region’s healthcare system, particularly given the lack of intensive care beds previously experienced in the governorate of Béja. In many cases, this shortage had required the transfer of patients to hospitals in the capital.
Eight fully equipped beds and four oxygen beds
The official said the new unit includes eight intensive care beds fitted with advanced medical technologies, along with four oxygen beds, aimed at improving the management of patients who require close monitoring and critical care.
Reinforced medical teams to improve emergency care
The unit has also been strengthened with paramedical staff and specialist doctors in several fields. This reinforcement, Mounir Jbali noted, is expected to enhance emergency care, bring healthcare services closer to residents of Béja, and more broadly meet the needs of populations across the North-West governorates.
