Nigerian authorities announced that the death toll from floods that hit Niger State this week has risen to 151, forcing thousands of residents to flee their homes.
Ibrahim Odu Hussini, director of information for the Niger State Emergency Management Agency, told Reuters the new death toll was an increase from the previous death toll of 117 published on Friday.
Hussini added that more than 500 families had been affected by the floods, while the number of displaced people exceeded 3,000.
Flooding hit the town of Mokoua in central Niger State on Wednesday evening and continued into Thursday morning. Rescue teams continue to search through mud and rubble for bodies.
