Nobel Peace Prize goes to Ales Bialiatski, two organizations

The Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on Friday it has decided to award the 2022 Nobel Peace Prize to one individual and two organizations that “represent civil society in their home countries,” Ales Bialiatski from Belarus, Memorial from Russia, and the Center for Civil Liberties from Ukraine.

“Through their consistent efforts in favor of humanist values, anti-militarism and principles of law, this year’s laureates have revitalized and honored Alfred Nobel’s vision of peace and fraternity between nations – a vision most needed in the world today,” the committee said in its written statement.

The candidates for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize included Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Russian opposition politician Alexey Navalny, Pope Francis, Bialiatski’s fellow from the Belarussian Coordination Council Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, and whistleblower Edward Snowden from the United States.
