The official spokesperson for the General Directorate of National Security, Brigadier Imed Mamacha, revealed today, Thursday, February 13, 2025, that 209 children have been apprehended in connection with begging, in addition to six foreign nationals.
In a statement to the national radio, Brigadier Mamacha added that the number of individuals accused of human trafficking increased from 57 to 107 in 2024.
He stressed that security efforts continue to combat this phenomenon but noted that the approach is not solely security-based.
Meanwhile, the president of the International Association for the Defense of Human Rights, Reda Krouida, underlined that a recent study by the association revealed that the poverty rate does not exceed 15%, and some individuals engage in organized begging.
Krouida also pointed out the increasing number of beggars from sub-Saharan Africa, particularly pregnant women, as well as the exploitation of children in begging.
