Oddity | “No Trousers Tube Ride”: London Underground Taken Over by the ‘Pantsless’

The “No Trousers Tube Ride” is a festive and quirky event held every year in several major cities around the world, including London, where it takes place each January.

In practical terms, participants arrange to meet on the Underground and travel without trousers, while remaining otherwise normally dressed (coats, sweaters, shoes, sometimes even a tie). The idea is to behave as if nothing were out of the ordinary, with no slogans and no demands.

Originally, the No Trousers Tube Ride was launched in 2002 in New York by the artistic collective Improv Everywhere. The aim is neither political nor provocative, but purely humorous—designed to surprise passengers and create a light-hearted moment in public spaces.

Over the years, the event has spread to many cities, including London, Paris, Berlin, Madrid, and Tokyo. In London, it is usually held in January and brings together several hundred participants across different Underground lines.

Organizers stress the importance of respecting local laws: participants wear standard underwear, and the event unfolds without causing any disturbance to public order.

Today, the No Trousers Tube Ride is seen as a collective urban performance, blending humor, playful absurdity, and conviviality, and has become an unusual winter fixture in several world capitals.
