Official: 49 Tunisian pilgrims dead, minister sacked but investigation continues…

Just before his dismissal this Friday, June 21, the Minister of Religious Affairs, Brahim Chaibi, provided the latest report on deaths during the pilgrimage to Mecca. He revealed that the Tunisian pilgrims who lost their lives stood at 49, “a toll which can be revised upwards”, reports the official press agency…

“Neglect in the supervision of pilgrims could explain this tragedy,” acknowledged the ex-minister, before indicating that his department will shed light on all the shortcomings to locate all accountabilities. It is not Brahim Chaibi who will lead these investigations but his successor.

The former minister, who talked at the arrival of the pilgrims’ first return flight at Tunis-Carthage airport, added that the vast majority of victims were registered among the pilgrims who had boarded with a tourist visa, to then slip among the so-called legal pilgrims. 44 people died there.

So 5 deaths were registered among those who travelled within the legal framework, after drawing lots. But the vital prognosis of an injured Tunisian pilgrim is still in jeopardy…
